Class Expectations

8th Grade Math Expectation Sheet
 Mrs. Shipp and Mrs. Wohlers

Expectations for Students:
·         Respect yourself and others!
·         Come to class on time and with all the supplies you need for the day.
·         Take an active role in your learning.

Daily Assignments and Quizzes:
·         At the end of most class periods, students are asked to complete an assignment for independent practice over the skills/concepts presented. It is very important to have your practice done on time and in the classroom when it is due so you have the ability to ask questions and have a discussion with your partner which is an expectation of ALL 8th grade math students.
·         Students will be expected to check their own daily assignments and quizzes and self-assess their learning using the following 4 point scale. Students will also be expected to record the correct answer to any problems they missed so they can figure out where their mistake happened.
·         All quizzes are announced. These quizzes serve as “checkpoints” for the students to know what concepts they need to review before the assessment.
·         All practice and quizzes should be completed in their math notebook.
·         Daily practice and quizzes will be graded on a 4 point scale.
o   B = Student demonstrated mastery
o   C = Adequate evidence of learning - more practice needed to reach mastery
o   D = Inconsistent evidence of learning - more practice needed not only independently but also some extra assistance from a teacher to reach mastery
o   I = Student did not complete practice - data unavailable to determine level of mastery
Late Work:
·         Students must check all late/missing practice and quizzes before the information will be changed in the grade book.  This includes writing in the correct answer(s) for any problems they might have missed.
Bell Work:
·         At the start of each class period, the expectation for the students is to complete the bell work slide.
o   Mondays : Fill out your planner
o   Tuesday – Friday:
§  Start your discussion on the homework assignment with your partner.
§  If no homework was assigned, there will be a few problem(s)/question(s) for you to work through or answer in your notebook.
Class Notes:
·         Students are expected to bring a notebook every day to class to take notes in.  All notes should be labeled with the date and the lesson topic.  The notes should be organized and readable.  The vocabulary, instructions and examples for each day should be included in your notes.
Assessment:
·         An assessment will be given at the completion of each unit to show the student’s mastery of the standards.
·         Assessment will not be allowed to leave the room but the front page of each assessment will have a table made up of standards, section number and title and mastered or not mastered that students will be expected to fill out and take with them as a way to teach students how to self-assess their learning and communicate to you (parents/guardians) about where your student’s understanding is.
·         Students will be expected to correct and retake all parts of an assessment where they did not meet mastery of the standard.

·      Assessment Grading Breakdown:
·         A: Strong evidence of learning; student demonstrated superior knowledge, skill and application of subject matter; all assessment data supports understanding of concepts above and beyond expectations
B: Good evidence of learning; student demonstrated good knowledge, skill and application of subject matter; all assessment data supports understanding of concepts at level of expectations
·         C: Adequate evidence of learning; student demonstrated adequate knowledge, skill and application of subject matter; some assessment data supports understanding of concepts at level of expectations
·         D: Inconsistent evidence of learning; student demonstrated inconsistent knowledge, skill and application of subject matter; assessment data supports inconsistent understanding of concepts
·         IL (incomplete learning): Incomplete evidence of learning; student demonstrated little/no knowledge, skill and application of subject matter; assessment data supports little/no understanding of concepts; student needs further opportunity for learning to take place
·         I: Not enough data is available to determine level of learning; more student data is required from the student
